Police have released the identities of two men who were killed when a tractor trailer drove into oncoming traffic on the afternoon of June 30. New York authorities have confirmed that a 51-year-old and a 25-year-old were killed in the car accident that involved six vehicles and closed the Thruway for some time. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
According to reports, a 51-year-old man was driving a tractor-trailer hauling construction equipment eastbound on the Thruway when, for reasons unknown, the man left the highway, went over the center median and into oncoming westbound traffic. He struck a pickup truck carrying both victims head-on. Both men are believed to have been killed instantly.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured in the crash, but he is listed as being in stable condition as of this report. Several other vehicles were damaged in the crash, but thankfully, no one else reported any injuries. It is unknown whether any charges have been filed against the tractor-trailer driver at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
If New York police determine the car accident was in some way the fault of the tractor-trailer driver who entered the oncoming lane, it seems likely the man will face criminal charges related to the two deaths the accident caused. Additionally, the families of the deceased men may choose to file wrongful death lawsuits against the driver and the company that owns the vehicle. These suits would be handled separately from the criminal case in a civil court setting.
